LABORATORIES, COMPUTERS AND OTHER FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

The Program supports eight sets of laboratories within the Departments of Geography, each with equipment and work stations appropriate to the lab.  The labs include:  Aerial Photography Interpretation, Cartography, Climatology, Geomorphology, Hydrology, Remote Sensing and Wetland Studies.  The labs and equipment are managed by full-time qualified personnel who provide technical assistance and field support to faculty members and students.

At each university, there is an extensive range of both mainframe and microcomputer environments to which students have access.

Computer cartography is supported by a major centre on each campus offering a choice of either Apple MacIntosh or IBM-compatible cartographic systems. A variety of Geographic Information Systems are available including Arc/GIS, Arc/INFO, ArcVIEW,  SPANS, TERRASOFT, IDRISI, MAP INFO.

The Cold Regions Research Centre at WLU supports and promotes research in mountainous and high latitude regions.

The Earth-Observation Laboratory at UW is maintained by the Institute for Space and Terrestrial Science as part of a provincially funded Centre of Excellence and provides specialist facilities for remote sensing.
